Allen-Crapper Associates are consulting engineers in Safety and Failure Analysis. The Partners and Associates are all qualified engineers and have extensive knowledge and experience with backgrounds involving Aerospace, Marine Engineering, Heavy Industrial and Military.

Career specialisations include: Design, Stress, Failure Investigation, Accident Investigation, Research and Development, Reliability and Statistical Analysis, FMECA, Product Support, On-line Maintenance, Airworthiness, Metallurgy and Nuclear Propulsion and Reactor Technology.

The Partners are:

Peter Allen, BSc (Eng) CEng FRAeS

Peter was formerly manager of the Failure Analysis and Reliability Group, Civil Aero Engines at Rolls-Royce plc. A forty year career with Rolls-Royce progressed through Development, Preliminary Design, Stress Office and Staff Engineering. He was involved with the Rolls-Royce in-house O-D-A course for 20 years before retirement, and continued to run and develop the course since then, besides acting as consultant and Failure Investigator for different aerospace companies.


John Maciver, IEng MRAeS MCMI MSaRS

John, a former Royal Air Force executive aero systems engineer, has extensive operational, strategic and maintenance experience across a wide spectrum of engineering. His unusually varied career has included a collaborative aircraft fatigue testing programme in Munich, Flight Safety, crash investigation and airworthiness, as well as a range of international aerospace projects. He joined Allen-Crapper Associates in 2003


David Higson, MSc BEng CEng FIMechE

David is a former Royal Air Force Engineering Officer with specialist knowledge of aero-engines who has an MSc in Gas Turbine Technology from Cranfield University. Across a wide range of aircraft, he was responsible for aircraft structural integrity and for the safety and airworthiness of aircraft mechanical systems. David has extensive experience of conducting challenging fault investigations with manufacturers in the UK, Europe and the USA. He joined Allen-Crapper Associates in 2011.

Brian Dale

Following a laboratory apprenticeship with a heavy engineering company associated with power generation and transport, Brian then joined Rolls-Royce. There, he had a long career in the failure investigation laboratory, followed by a number of years in Safety & Reliability conducting FMECAs and in-service safety issues.  He also ran the R-R in-house O-D-A courses, before joining Allen-Crapper Associates some 10 years ago and is a Senior Associate.


Dr Colin Dimbylow, PhD MSc B Tech Hons C Phys C Eng MIMMM M Inst P

Following a degree and PhD in materials science, Colin spent 10 years at the RN Portsmouth Dockyard, conducting failure analysis and undertaking research into welding and corrosion.  A MSc in Nuclear Reactor Technology preceded a further 22 years managing a range of nuclear submarine programmes including all nuclear R&D activities.  He retired from the MoD in 2007 when Technical Hd of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme. Colin joined Allen-Crapper Associates in 2008 and also provides consultancy support to the nuclear industry.


Bob MacNaught, BSc CEng MIET MIExpE MAPM

Bob, a former Royal Air Force Engineering Officer, Aero Systems & Weapons, he served for 30 years at bases in the UK and abroad.  Responsibilities included safety of armed combat aircraft operations and explosives safety management of conventional and nuclear weapons systems.  His connection with the Armed Forces continued with recent appointments in the UK's Ministry of Defence.


Mike McArthur

Mike has an extensive and broad engineering background, ranging from an apprenticeship with Albion Motors, a marine engineer with Clan Line to a number of years with Rolls-Royce as a development engineer and then Assistant Chief Engineer at R-R East Kilbride.  He joined Allen-Crapper Associates around 15 years ago.


Hamish McNinch, MBE BSc(Eng) C Eng FRAeS

Hamish, a former British Army helicopter engineer, has wide operational, maintenance and logistic experience in military aviation and has run support authorities for Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Army aircraft. He has wide experience in aircraft procurement including such projects as the UK Apache, C-17, A400M, FSTA and flight simulators. In addition to work with Allen-Crapper Associates, Hamish is involved with power generation and redevelopment projects in Iraq.


Liam Perry, MCGI CEng MIET RAeS MIExpE

Liam is a former Royal Air Force Aerosystems engineering senior officer with 39 years’ service in a wide variety of roles across Air, Land and Sea platforms, including being a bomb disposal officer for 10 years. He has extensive experience of systems maintenance, engineering management and high-level staff work including armament technologies from pyrotechnics and countermeasures through to nuclear weapons. He has also been a training specialist for the RAF and a risk analyst.


David Butt

David was most recently responsible for engine design, integration and safety issues between Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner. During 32 years at Rolls-Royce he held a range of positions including Engine Performance, Safety & Reliability, Preliminary Design and Whole Engine Design. He worked on RB211-524G/H, Trents (700, 800, 500, 900 & 1000), Advanced Projects, and was granted several patents. He lectured on the in-house O-D-A course for over 15 years, being course owner for the last 10. David joined Allen-Crapper Associates in 2015.


Steve Andrews MiMMM CEng

Following an apprenticeship with British Rail Engineering Ltd, Steve worked in various roles associated with the development, manufacture, testing and failure investigation of railway rolling stock and their component parts. Steve then moved to Rolls-Royce, initially supporting new and in-service Nuclear Steam Generating Plant, before joining the Civil Aero Engine Failure Investigation team, undertaking investigations into gas turbine engine component failures. Following early retirement in 2014, Steve started working with Allen-Crapper Associates in 2015.
